SADE SATI

Sade Sati is an astrological concept associated with the transit of Saturn or Shani. This slow moving planet takes two and half years to transit through one zodiac sign. It takes about 30 years to complete the 12 zodiac signs. Sade sati occurs when shani transits through 12th, 1st and 2nd house from the natal moon.It spans about seven and half years to transit through these three signs. 

   Literally the word Sade Sati means seven and half years, Sade means half and sati means seven. In a whole life a native will have to go through 3 or 4 sade sati periods. This period is believed to be inauspicious and people going  through Sade Sati will have its negative impact on life. Maha Shivratri is an important  festival listed in  Hindu calendar.It occurs on fourteenth day  of lunar month Magha.It is celebrated to worship Lord Shiva. This festival is very popular in India and Nepal.People observe fast all through the day  and observe night vigil all through the night.Special prayers like chanting Siva mantras and vedic hymns are performed in Siva Temples.

Rituals and Customs

On the day of celebration devotees rise up early  and take a bath to purify their body.Bathing in holy water like ganga is considered very auspicious. After that they pay a visit to temple where they perform offerings to sivalinga.Temple priests worship sivalinga by abhisheka, that is pouring water etc  on Sivalingam. Six different types of abhisheka is performed pouring  water, milk, ghee, honey, sugar and yogurt over sivalingam, following this they apply vermillion paste to on shivling ,since it represents Virtue.Then bilva leaves , preferably a stalk with three leaves is placed on top of Linga ,as this might cool the  deity.Devotees offer betel leaves ,flowers and many other auspicious materials to please the deity. Abhisheka purifies the Shivling  and thus the soul.Devotees spend the whole night chanting mantras,hymns and singing devotional songs.The next day they beak the fast.The next morning they break their fast by accepting prasad from  the temple priest.

Benefits and Significance of Shivratri

Mahashivratri is a sacred and significant day of Hindu tradition. The holy bath along with a  full day fast will make devotee's body clean and mind purified.As the devotees stay awake throughout the night, the spine remains vertical and this causes a uplift of spiritual energy through sushumna.Planets placement  of this sacred day is  such that , there will be an upsurge of spiritual energy in all human beings.According to  Hindu Mythology he who observe Mahashivratri vrat  with sincerity will be blessed by the the Lord Shiva ,thus he will be freed from all sins, and birth cycle.Mahashivratri vrat is observed very seriously by women both married and unmarried.Goddess Parvathy the consort of Lord Shiva will bestow them  marital bliss, prosperity and longevity.

Legends of Shivaratri

There are many legends which are related to Mahashivratri.Scriptures and Puranas shed light on different stories,let us go through the details briefly.

The Marriage of shiva Parvathi is the most important legend behind Shivaratri vrat.Once when Mahadeva( Shiv) along with  Sati(sakthi) was travelling through a forest,where they met Rama the incarnation of vishnu.Shiva bowed his head in front of Rama .Surprised by husband's behaviour Sati asked Lord Shiv why he was paying  venerance  to a mere mortal.Lord informed her that Rama was an incarnation of Mahavishnu.Sati was not satisfied with the answer and Shiva asked to verify.Sakthi ( sati) took form of seetha and went in front of Rama.Rama identified her as Sati and sati  realised the truth behind Rama.Since Seetha was motherlike to Shiva , after this event Siva was unable to consider as a wife and began to see her with a detached vision.Sati was really unhappy about  this change in siva.

After that Daksha Sati's father arranged  a Yajna and he did not invited  either Sati or Siva.But still sati went to attend the Yajna , Daksha didn't pay any attention to her, Sati feel severely humiliated and sacrifice herself by jumping into the  Yajna fire.The enraged shiva performed Rudra tandava or Dance  and destroyed Daksha's kingdom.The whole universe was horrified since Rudra tandava has the power to destroy whole universe.Mahavishnu sliced Sati's body into twelve parts and scattered it on earth.where ever it fell there surfaced sakthi peeth.After that Lord Shiva took severe penance and was living detached life at Himalaya.Sati reborn as God Himalya's daughter and she observed penance to get his consort back.As advised by Kamadeva Parvathy performed dance to break Shiva's meditation, at the same time Kamadeva shot his arrow of desire at shiva.Mahadeva got furious ,opened his third eye and burned kamadeva into ashes.Parvathy continued her penance and at last Shiva changed his mind.Shiva agreed to marry parvathy and soon they got married.That  was fourteenth day in magha month  and  their marriage  anniversary is celebrated as Mahashivratri.

Another legend goes to Samudra Manthan explained in Purana's.Deva's and Asura's jointly decided to churn the Milk ocean in order to obtain the Nectar.During the churning a disastrous poison called  Haala-hala emerged , since the poison could destroy whole universe Deva's ran to Mahadeva for help.Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the universe.Parvathi hold his neck to prevent it from reaching the stomach  and as a result poison remained in the throat. Due to the toxic effect Lord Shiva's throat became blue colored giving him the name Neelakanda.God's observed a night vigil in respect to Mahadeva and this day is celebrated as Mahashivratri.

The legend of Hunter goes like this.A hunter went to forest to obtain wood and food.During his return he lost his way and caught in the middle of the deadly forest.Some animal chased him and  it was getting dark.So  he climbed on a Bael  tree in order to spend his night.He decided to stay awake to prevent him from falling.He plucked and dropped the leaves.The leaves fell on the Shiva Linga located under the bael tree, although hunter was not aware of it.Lord Shiva pleased with his worship and that day is celebrated as Mahashivratri.

RAHU MAHADASHA

Rahu is a malefic and shadow planet. It is considered to be an aggressive and furious planet. It is supposed to bring hardships and lack of peace in the natives life.Rahu mahadasha lasts for 18 years.It causes lack of stability of mind, lack of harmony in familial life and lack of support and detachment  from family. what is Lunar Eclipse

Lunar eclipse occurs when Sun,Earth and Moon are in line with each other perfectly. Earth occupies the middle in this position earth blocks the sun rays and the shadow covers the Moon.hence Earth shadow blocks  the Sun light which would have reflects off the Moon.

How Eclipse  happens in Full Moon and rarely too.

The Moon takes 27.3 days to complete its orbit around Earth.When Moon  orbits around Earth  it illuminated by Sun and this aillumination varies depending on Sun's angle.At New Moon Moon is placed between Earth and Sun , so the Moon shows the side that doesn't reflects any Sun light and thus it  looks dark.A few days after as Moon progresses around earth it gradually began to  reflect  the Sun light and this face is called Waxing Moon.A week later Moon gets 90° away from the Sun and shows half illuminated from our earth's view .This phase is called first quarter.As days progresses the illuminated part  also gets wider and this phase is called waxing gibbous Moon .when Moon has progressed 180° then Sun,Earth and Moon are inline together and Moon's disc is in a perfectly close  position for being illuminated by Sunlight.So this is called Full Moon .Again Moon moves and when it reaches a position in which it appears to be illuminating more than half of its disc ,but in contrary to waxing phase it is  decreasing in amount.hence it is called Waning Gibbous phase .Some Days later when Moon completes another quarter of its orbit ,Now almost half of Moon's disc is illuminated by Sunlight.This is the Third quarter phase.when Moon moves again in its path it reaches the Waning- crescent phase in which less than half of it's face appears  shining  and it is decreasing too.Finally Moon moves back to its starting phase New moon position.As both these planet's orbit around the Sun is different and they rarely get  aligned perfectly.The Moon travels  above or below the Sun from our view ,but when occasionally it moves  right in front of the Sun and thus the Eclipse occurs.

Lunar Eclipse  does not occur every full moon because Moon's orbit is inclined to Earth's orbit by about 5 degrees.Moon converges Earth's orbit twice a month and the this points are known nodes.When Moon moves from south to north in its orbit it is ascending node and descending node if Moon moves from north to south.When Full Moon comes considerably close to one of these  nodes then Lunar Eclipse Happens.

Earth directs tow kinds of shadows upon Moon during the Lunar eclipse .Umbra the complete dark shadow and Penumbra is the partial outer shadow.

The eclipse can be divided in to many stages depending upon the contact points.

• First stage: This is the beginning stage, Penumbral Part of Earth's shadow touches Moon's outer limb.
• Second stage: Beginning of the partial eclipse,Earth's Umbra touches Moons outer limb.
• Third stage:Beginning of total eclipse,Moon is completely covered by Earth's umbra.
• Forth stage: peak stage of the eclipse ,Moon is as close as possible to Earth's center of umbra.
• Fifth stage: End of total eclipse.The Moon's outer limb moves out of umbra.
• Sixth stage:End of partial eclipse.Earth's umbra leaves Moon's surface.
• Seventh stage: This is the end of penumbral eclipse.The Earth's shadow is completely out of Moon's surface. 

 Types of Lunar Eclipse

 Total Lunar Eclipse

This occurs when Earth's umbra shadow completely falls on Moon,but the moon wont completely disappear.Sunlight passing through earth's atmosphere is scattered and focused on Moon and it appears as dimly  glowing. about 30% of eclipse are of this kind.

partial Lunar eclipse

This occurs when Sun,Earth and Moon are not perfectly aligned and a portion of moon passes through Earth's umbra.Some times it is visible to our eyes depending on planets alignment.

Penumbral Lunar eclipse

Penumbral eclipse happens when Moon is in earth's outer shadow(penumbra).it is not easily visible and you need a telescope to detect this kind of eclipse.

Hindu view 

According to Vedic astrology and Hindu mythology the rays from eclipse is considered as bad omen.Special prayers  and bathing in holy rivers are performed during eclipse. Observing fast and chanting mantra's are advised as a remedy to weaken the harm effects of eclipse.The Hindu Purana associates eclipses to  a Legend.It says that,when the ocean churning occured a demon tried to drink the elixir through deceitful method,by god's grace Sun and Moon realised  him  and informed Vishnu.Vishnu then cut off his head  . How ever, since some drops of elixir fall on his body the demon just got survived.The head is known as Rahu and the body ketu.Rahu Ketu take revenge on Sun and Moon by overshadowing them during eclipse.

Effects of zodiac signs.

Eclipse will occur on 31st January 2018 .As per IST lunar eclipse begins at 5:18 pm  and will end at 8:43pm.It will occur in Cancer sign pushya star .Scriptures suggest certain recompenses during this period ,also prohibits from doing certain acts.
